See Less Guardians' Chase DeLauter: Out long term with fractured foot DeLauter is expected to be sidelined for 4-to-5 months after undergoing surgery Jan. 10 to address a fracture to the fifth toe of his left foot, Mandy Bell of MLB. DeLauter broke the same foot last spring, with the injury preventing him from making his professional debut after the Guardians selected him last June with the No. 16 overall pick of the 2022 First-Year Player Draft.
4 percent last season, but the power remains enticing if he can improve his plate discipline. The 21-year-old is a natural first baseman, but getting more time in the corner outfield at the highest levels of the minors could open more pathways for his eventual major-league debut.... See Less Guardians' Bryan Lavastida: Could win backup job Lavastida could open the year as the Guardians' backup catcher while Bo Naylor gets more seasoning at Triple-A Columbus, Mandy Bell of MLB. Manager Terry Francona left open the possibility for Naylor to "knock the door down, " but it sounds like Lavastida could win the backup job behind Mike Zunino with a solid camp. Lavastida was an impressive offensive performer his entire minor-league career until he reached Triple-A in 2021. He struggled at that level again (85 wRC+) in 2022 and missed time with a hamstring injury.
but if you knock the door down, that sort of makes the timetable. But I think he's got a really good head situated really well. He's got a pretty good outlook. "While Naylor is Cleveland's catcher of the future and made his big-league debut already last season, the addition of Mike Zunino this offseason made it clear that Cleveland wasn't ready to hand Naylor the keys right out of the gate this year. As Bell notes, the expectation is for Naylor to get the call sometime this year to start sharing the catching duties with Zunino. Bryan Lavastida is the favorite to win the backup job to begin the season.... See Less Guardians' Myles Straw: Nursing knee soreness Feb 21, 2023 Straw won't be available for the first couple Cactus League games for the Guardians this spring due to soreness behind his right knee, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Manager Terry Francona pointed out that the team is just being cautious with its center fielder.
The odds of that happening could quickly evaporate if the lat issue is significant enough to prevent him from getting stretched out before Opening Day, but he'll still have a good chance of pushing for starts down the road as long as the injury isn't too serious.... See Less Guardians' Jose Ramirez: Feeling great Ramirez feels great following offseason thumb surgery, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. Ramirez recorded a respectable. 766 OPS after injuring his thumb in mid-June, but his 1. 039 OPS prior to the injury demonstrates what he's capable of. It will be good to see the four-time All-Star back up his words with some strong spring performances, but it looks as though there's every reason to believe he'll be fully healthy heading into the year.... See Less Guardians' Mike Zunino: Could be ready for spring opener Zunino (shoulder) could be ready for the Cactus League opener Feb. 25 against the Reds, Mandy Bell of MLB.
